Homemade Italian Seasoning Recipe

Italian cuisine holds a special place in many American households, with classics like spaghetti sauce and pizza gracing our dinner tables. However, when our family had to transition to a grain-free diet due to autoimmune issues, traditional Italian staples like pasta and dairy were off the menu. This prompted me to embark on a culinary journey to create flavorful dishes that aligned with our dietary constraints.

One of the first homemade mixes I experimented with was Italian seasoning. Tired of constantly purchasing expensive jars of organic Italian seasoning from stores, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Opting for fresher and more flavorful ingredients, I began ordering Italian herbs in bulk to create my own blend.

The key to a successful homemade Italian seasoning mix lies in the quality of the herbs used. While dried herbs from grocery stores may lack freshness and flavor, sourcing herbs from specialized stores or growing your own ensures a superior taste. I store my homemade herbal blends in half-pint glass jars, conveniently labeled for easy access and storage.

The ingredients for my Italian seasoning mix typically include dried basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, thyme, and garlic. While some may choose to add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick or onion powder for extra flavor, I prefer to tailor the spice level to suit each recipe. Additionally, those following an autoimmune diet can benefit from having this versatile blend on hand to enhance the flavor of their dishes.

To make the Italian seasoning blend, simply combine all the herbs in a glass jar and shake well to mix. Alternatively, you can mix the herbs in a bowl before transferring them to the jar. This cost-effective alternative to store-bought seasoning mixes ensures a fresh and vibrant flavor in your culinary creations.

In addition to Italian seasoning, I also enjoy crafting my own spice blends like taco seasoning. Experimenting with different herbs and spices allows me to customize my dishes and elevate their flavors.

When it comes to using the Italian seasoning blend, the possibilities are endless. From pasta sauces to soups to meatballs, this versatile mix can enhance a wide range of dishes with its robust flavor profile. Whether you’re a fan of traditional Italian dishes or looking to spice up your weeknight meals, this homemade seasoning blend is a must-have in your pantry.
